Definition
Sialography is the radiographic examination of the salivary glands ( Parotid and Submandibular gland) and ducts using contrast media.

Indications
Stones (Sialolithiasis)
Obstruction/Stricture
Pain & Swelling
Infection
Mass/Tumor

Contrast
The contrast is used is urographin 60% or non ionic contrast omnipaque

Risk Factors
Allergy to contrast
Pain on injection
Ductal rupture
Extravassation of contrast
Bleeding

Equipments
X ray unit
Fluoroscopy with spot film device
21guage catheter
2 cc syringe
Urographin
Surgical gloves

Preparation
The procedure should be explained to patient before undergoing to procedure.

All metallic ornaments should be removed.

Ask for any contrast reaction.
Ask for any pregnancy. 

Procedure
The patient is asked to suck on lemon wedge for 2-3 minutes before sialography.

It makes the salivary duct opening for cannulation
Then parotid and submandibular duct is cannulated
21 guage catheter is used for parotid duct
And 24 or 27 gauge catheter is used for submandibular duct
Then the 2ml of iodinated contrast is injected under fluoroscopic guidance and immediately spot films are taken both skull ap & lat and lateral oblique if required.
Filming
Plain film skull ap and lat for stones.

For parotid – PA, Lat and lat oblique.
For submandibular - Lat and Lat oblique and AP in open mouth depress tongue

Two technique : - Intracath technique and Lacrimal cannula technique
