Barium Meal Follow Through
Difinition
A Barium examination of the first part of small intestine (duodenum) to ileocecal junction is called barium meal follow through (BMFT).
Indications
Abdominal pain and diarhea
Malaabsorption
Abdominal mass
Anemia/Gastrointestinal bleeding
Colonic obstruction
Suspected perforation
Contrast
The contrast is used is barium sulphate
Risk Factors
Leakage of barium from unsuspected perforation. Aspiration
Barium converts partial obstruction into complete obstruction
Equipments
X ray unit
Fluoroscopic system with spot film
Barium sulphate
Surgical gloves
Preparation
The patient should be fasting for 6 hours prior to examination.
The procedure should be explained to the patient before undergoing procedure.
All metallic ornaments should be removed.
Procedure
The patient lies supine on the table and plain abdomen film is taken including stomach, small intestine and large intestine.
The patient drinks barium contrast of 1-2 cup
Then abdomen supine film is taken.
And then the patient lies in prone position and abdomen PA is taken.
Then the remaining radiographs are taken in every 20-30 min in prone postion until the contrast reaches the ileum.
When the barium reaches the ceacum spot films of ileocecal junction is taken.
It takes from 2 to 6 hours.
Filming
Plain abdomen AP supine.
Abddomen AP supine after contrast
Then abdomen prone after every 30 minutes.
Then abdomen prone supine film of ileocecal junction
