Definition
Barium swallow is the radiographic study of pharynx and esophagus up to the level of stomach with the help of contrast.
Indications
Dysphagia (Difficulty in swallowing)
Heart burn
Gastroesophageal reflux
Hiatus hernia
Vomiting
Suspected peforation
Contrast
The contrast is used is barium sulphate (Baso4)
Risk Factors
Allergic reaction
Anaphylaxis (Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may cause death.)
Vomiting
Contrast reflux
Aspiration
Equipments
X ray unit
Fluoroscopy with spot film device
Barium sulphate
Sterile glass
Surgical gloves etc.
Preparation
The procedure should be explained to patient before undergoing to procedure.
All metallic ornaments should be removed specially in chest region.
The patient should be NBM as possible.
Take patient history
Check pregnancy status.
Procedure
The patient lies supine on the table and plain film should be taken including pharynx, esophagus and stomach.
One mouthful contrast bolus is given to the patient.
Then the patient is asked to swallow once and stop swallowing there after.
Frontal and oblique views are taken including pharynx, esophagus, and stomach.
Exposure should be made immediately when the patient swallowing the contrast.
Filming
Plain film soft tissue neck with thorax AP
After Contrast :
1.Soft tissue neck AP –Lat.
2.Thorax ap and thorax right anterior oblique (RAO)
