BARIUM MEAL
A barium examination of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine (Duodenum) is call barium meal test.
Indications
Dyspepsia
Weight loss
Upper abdominal mass
Suspected perforation
Reflux disease
Bowel Obstruction
Contrast
The contrast is used is barium sulphate 120ml
Risk Factors
Allergic reaction
Vomiting
Contrast reflux
Leakage of barium from unsuspected perforation
Aspiration
Intravasation
Equipments
X ray unit
Fluoroscopic system with spot film
Barium sulphate
Sterile glass
Surgical gloves
Preparation
Procedure should be explained to patient before undergoing to procedure.
All Metallic ornaments should be removed specially in the abdomen region.
The Patient should be fasting for 6 hours prior to the examination.
Procedure
The patient lies supine on the table and plain abdomen film is taken including lower esophagus, stomach and duodenum.
The patient drinks barium while lying on the left side and then to supine position if reflux is observed spot films are taken.
The patient is asked to rolled from side to side so barium coats mucosal surfaces.
When the barium enters duodenum patient is turned in RAO and films are taken

Supine : Antrum and body
RAO : To demonstrate antrum and greater curve
LAO : Lesser curve
Supine-Right anterior oblique
