BARIUM ENEMA

                           Barium Enema
Difinition
Radiographic study of large bowel by administration of contrast medium through the rectum is called barium enema.
Indications
Large bowel obstruction
History of recent rectal
To check patency of distal loop
Colon cancer
Colorectal neoplasia

Contrast
The contrast is used is barium sulphate if other air

Risk Factors
Abdominal discomfort
Colonic obstruction
Perforation

Equipments
X ray unit
Barium sulphate
Foley’s catheter
Ascepto syringe
Dispo syringe 
Surgical gloves
Anaesthetic jelly 

Preparation
Low residue diet for 2 days
A tap water cleansing enema of 1500 ml on the morning of the barium enema examination.
The patient should passed the motion before examination.

Procedure
 The patient lies supine on the table and plain abdomen ap film is taken.

Then the patient lies on their left side with right leg flexed in Sims position.

Then clean the rectal area from betaden

Then the Foleys’s catheter lubricated with anaesthetic jelly is inserted into the rectum.

The insertion should not exceed 3 to 4 cm and then inflate the with sterile water.

Then the contrast is injected into the colon through the catheter.

Then the contrast reaches the rectum Left lateral view of rectum is taken

Left lateral view of the rectosigmoid junction.

Turn the patient to the LAO or left side position moves barium into the proximal sigmoid colon, descending colon, and splenic flexure.

Once the barium reaches the apex of the splenic flexure, turning the patient to the prone.

Position will move barium into the middle of the transverse colon

AP views of transverse colon.

The contrast should continue to flow until it reaches the caecum.

AP view of ascending colon are taken.

Plain Abdomen ap supine
Rectum : Left lateral view
Sigmoid : LPO and right lateral
Splenic Flexure : RPO View
Hepatic Flexure : LPO View
Caecum : AP and LPO View
